Today's women have excelled in all fields ranging from household to politics and management. They are setting new benchmarks in all walks of life. Women have conquered new horizons. If they can manage the household with ease, so can they scale the highest summit or even travel to space. Thus, to honor the achievements of women all across the globe, the International Women's Day is observed every year on March 8 to recognize the contribution of women in various professions and disciplines. The day also marks the call for action for accelerating gender parity within the society. Political, economic and social developments, acts of courage by ordinary women and their contribution towards the progress of the society are also highlighted on this day.

Every year a theme is selected by the UN for celebrating Women's Day. This year in 2019, the theme for Women's Day is “Balance for Better”.

  • The roots of the mass movement behind the International Women's Day lies in the protest for better pay and voting rights.
  • International Women's Day is celebrated worldwide. March 8 is declared as an official holiday in nearly 28 countries including Ukraine, China and Vietnam.
  • On 28 February 1909, the first National Women's Day was celebrated in the United States after a declaration made by the Socialist Party of America.
    It is said that Russian women observed the first Women's Day on the eve of World War I. They campaigned for peace on the last Sunday of February in 1913.
  • It was in 1975 that the United Nations gave official sanctions to the International Women’s Day and also started sponsoring it.
  • Earlier the day was only for recognizing the efforts of working women. It was intended to recognize the economic, political and social achievements of women around the globe.
  • To counterpart, the International Women's Day, the International Men's Day is also celebrated on November 19 every year.
  • As per research, it is found that women are a better leader than men.

How did it start?

In 1908, women in New York held demonstrations demanding equal voting rights, better pay and better working conditions. To honor their struggle, February 28, 1909, was declared as Women's Day by the Socialist Party of America.

In August 1910 a meeting was organized in Copenhagen in Denmark. In that meeting, 100 women from 17 countries approved the proposal of declaring a day as International Women's Day. No date was fixed but yes, the concept came into existence. Many changes took place around the world with regards to this idea. In the year 1975, the concept of celebrating International Women's day was adopted by the United Nations. Until 1977 Women's day was observed in socialist countries only. Later, when the United Nations started celebrating this day by adopting annual themes, women from all over the world began celebrating it every year on 8th March.

Why is it observed?

Women's Day is a very significant day. The day remembers the struggles initiated by women to attain equality. Many celebrations are held recognizing the unity, reflections, advocacy, actions and rights of women. The day's importance lies in the fact that a number of programs are observed to create awareness among people on a number of social issues such as gender inequality, female foeticide, domestic violence etc. These programs motivate and encourage people and governments to eradicate all forms of violence and social injustices that women have to face. It calls upon women to lead a life where they can fulfill their dreams and realize their ambitions without any hindrances.

How is it Celebrated worldwide?

International Women's Day events are held worldwide on March 8. Various women, including political, community, and business leaders, as well as leading educators, inventors, entrepreneurs, and television personalities, are usually invited to speak at various events like in seminars, conferences, luncheons, dinners or breakfasts. Many events are organized and art performances, rallies, talks, conferences, marches, networking events are held depicting the struggles of the women and the achievements that they have made.

  • Some offices grant holidays to their female employees to mark this occasion.
  • In some countries, the extraordinary accomplishments of females are praised and their contribution in shaping the country is appreciated.

  • Popular search engine Google also honors women by dedicating a Google doodle to mark the celebration which usually features women and girls around the globe.
  • The International Women's Day logo is in purple and white and shows the symbol of Venus, which is also the symbol of being female.

Every year there are large global gatherings, conferences, awards, exhibitions, festivals, corporate events, concerts and performances etc to celebrate the occasion of International Women's Day.

  • Events are held all over India, at National as well as community level to honour women of substance. Competitions are organised. Awareness campaigns for Breast Cancer, cervical Cancer are also held for the benefit of the women. Men gift the important women of their lives like mothers, sisters and wives with flowers and gifts.
