Wedding is an occasion colored with shades of love, joy and happiness. The ringing of wedding bells, the soft fragrance of lilies and the wide festive decorative looks, fills the ambience with loads of joyful gaiety. Since earlier times, wedding bells happen to constitute an important part of wedding accessories. Bells are always regarded to be very sacred, as they indicate the arrival of Holy Communion. However, different traditions and cultures view the significance of the bells in different ways. As in ancient times, the bell was used to sound the hours of the day. Exquisite bells have been used for centuries to call people to worship, announce both good news and bad, to proclaim the birth of kings or celebrate the end of wars.
Though with the changing of time, the significance of beautiful wedding bells has undergone some changes, yet majority of the young couples prefer to stick to the cultural and ethical backgrounds.
Certain traditions, like the Celtic Scottish wedding, have its roots in pagan rituals. Pealing wedding bells proclaims the divinity of the marriage accord between the newly wedded couple. According to the ancient Egyptian tradition, while worshipping god Osiris, small wedding bells in the form of flat gongs were used in wedding ceremonies. Whereas in Christian churches, bells came to be used in the year 400 A.D. and were first introduced by Paulinus, bishop of Nola, near the town of Campania, in Italy. These bells became quite popular, as in those times the church-bell was useful not only for summoning the religious services, but also for giving an alarm in times of danger.
But it was only in 604 A.D, that Pope Sabinian officially sanctioned the use of bells for wedding ceremonies to bless the newly wedded couples. Very large bells, usually used for church towers, were probably not common until the eleventh century. In various museums of Europe one can find many old bells which are preserved and well maintained, particularly of Scottish and Irish origin. These bells are square in shape and are made of bronze or iron sheets centered together. Originally bells were said to be used on Christmas to indicate the coming of Santa Claus.
Now days, many well designed wedding bells are flooding the market, for they are very attractive and embellished in a unique way. Specially designed wedding bells in the shape of castles, presented in elegant gift box tied with soft organza ribbon is quite popular.
