Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love which is observed on the 14th of February every year. As per legend, St Valentine was imprisoned for refusing to give up Christianity. While in jail, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and they met regularly as she visited him in confinement. St Valentine was executed on the 14th of February and before going for the execution, he wrote a love letter to the jailer’s daughter, signing it ‘From your Valentine.’ February 14th thus came to be celebrated as a day for love, as Valentine’s Day and the expression ‘from your valentine’ is still used.
Valentine’s Day was limited only to romantic couples till the 19th C. However, the significance of the festival has undergone a change over the recent years, and today encompasses expressing love and affection towards all those who made their lives special. Today, Valentine’s Day also celebrates all beautiful human relationships.
