How to Write a Thank You Note

Thank You Note
"Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom."
-Marcel Proust

The power of the simple words Thank You is astounding. These two little words if expressed at the right time and in the right manner can do wonders not only to a relationship, but even to one's soul. However, many people do find themselves struggling to express themselves and keep procrastinating. To make matters simple for you here are a few pointers at how to write a perfect thank you note.

Add important and specific details

Personal details in a thank you note are extremely appreciated. Tell your friends to whom you are writing the note about your experience. Describe every minute detail about the gift or their gesture which made you feel gratitude towards them. Explain to them what you did with the gift or what was the impact of their help to you. Also, let them know that you are thinking of them while recalling the details. This makes them feel more connected to you.

Thank You Note

A Big No to Technology:

  • Do not send thank you notes via email or messages on phone.

  • Buy good quality stationary like embossed cards, and write a hand-written note.

  • Write a draft in a rough paper with all the random thoughts that come to you mind before writing the fair and final note.

  • Use a fountain or a gel pen.

  • The colour of the ink should be blue-black or black..

Thank You Note

  • Greet the person at the beginning of the letter. A "Dear _name_"or a "My Dear _name_" works perfectly well.

  • Begin the note is a natural manner without being stiff, and enquire about the well being.

Thank You Note

Expressing your Gratitude

  • Express your thanks in no uncertain terms.

  • Mention the reason for the thanks.

  • Keep the language very simple. It should be as simple as "I want to thank you for the _ .

  • If it is a cash gift you are thanking for, do not name the amount. Just use the word generosity. " I thank you for the generosity"

  • You must mention how it is useful in case of a tangible gift. Like " I love drinking my morning tea from the Tea Cups you have presented me"

  • In case of events like a dinner or a party you are thanking for, mention how much you enjoyed yourself. For e.g. " I really relaxed and enjoyed myself after a long time"

Thank You Note

Keep the Note Short

  • Keep the note short and sweet.

  • While writing the note, you must mention the past, when your paths crossed, and also allude to the future with the promise of meeting again soon.

  • It will not be an overkill to thank once again towards the end of the note.

Thank You Note

Wrap up

  • Once you have thanked you must end the letter with the proper regards. It could be "With Love", or just "love".

DON'TS While Writing a Thank You Note

  • Do not exaggerate

  • Try to be your natural self. If you are stiff then the thank you will seem forced.

  • In case of monetary gift never name the sum.

  • Do not include any personal information not related to the gratitude.

  • Remember it is never too late to say thank you. So if you have procrastinated, and the thank you has been long overdue, it does not matter, write the note.

Do not let the age of information and technology compromise the beautiful and charming practice of writing thank you notes. Write that pending note today.
