Boss's Day, also known as National Boss Day or Bosses Day, is celebrated every year on 16 October. When the holiday falls on a weekend, it is generally celebrated on the working day closest to October 16. This day is dedicated to all employers and is observed in the United States, Canada, India, Australia, South Africa and Lithuania. The purpose of this day is show their boss some appreciation and thank them for being kind and fair throughout the year. This day is observed to strengthen the relationships between employers and employees. It is not a public holiday and schools, government buildings or businesses have normal opening hours.

History of Boss's Day

The history of Boss's Day dates can be traced back to 1958. This is when Patricia Bays Haroski, an employee of State Farm Insurance Co. in Deerfield, Illinois, decided to register Boss day as a holiday with the U.S Chamber of Commerce. She chose October 16th as the Boss day because it was her father's birthday, who also happened to be her boss. The purpose of her creating this holiday was not only to honor her own boss but so all employees could honor their bosses. She also believed that Boss's Day would become instrumental in improving employer-employee relations. In 1962, Illinois Governor Otto Kerner backed Haroski's registration and officially proclaimed the day as an observance. She also believed that Boss's Day would become instrumental in improving employer-employee relations.

Traditionally, Boss's Day was celebrated by an employee giving their boss or supervisor a card. However, in recent years give their bosses cards, candy, chocolates, gift certificates, or flowers on Boss's Day and some offices are pooling their money together to buy even bigger gifts.
