Thiruvonam Onam (11 September 2019)
The tenth and the most important day of Onam celebrations is known as Thiruvonam or Sravanotsav. Here Thiru or Tiru stands for sacred, holy, beautiful or auspicious. Each of these two names has a special significance for the people of Kerala. However, some scholars believe that the two names are related and the now popular Thiru Onam comes from Sravanotsavam.
It is the final day of Onam festival. People take bath early in the morning, dress up in new clothes. Women clean up the house and decorate a flower mat in the front courtyard of the house to welcome the spirit of the legendary King. Special prayers are held in temples and also distribute alms to the poor and needy.
A grand meal called Thiruona Sadya (Onam Special Meal) is prepared in all the households ,to impress upon the spirit of the King Thiru.
Onam evenings are spent playing games and indulging in cultural events. Lightening and dazzling display of fire also takes place with much fanfair. Several competitions are held in the different parts of Kerala.
On the last and the main day of Onam, Thiru Onam, special Onam songs are sing in praise of King Mahabali.
“Vaninnevam asuya valarthi
Vazka maveli mangalamoorthy..”
“Maveli Nadu Vaneedum Kalam
Manusharellarum onnu pole.”
