  • On the date of Palm Sunday, people gather to celebrate and they are sad as well because Jesus died on the cross in less than a week after entering Jerusalem.
  • Palm Sunday date every year falls on the Sunday before Easter. Jesus entered Jerusalem on this day for the Jewish festival of Passover. People standing on the roads greeted Him and shouted praises for Him.
  • They created the tradition of waving palm branches for welcoming Him.
  • They also laid down branches and their clothes on the roads and shouted ‘Hosanna!’, which meant ‘Save us Now’.
  • On the day of Palm Sunday, the Lord is worshipped in the churches and at homes. Children are handed over crosses made from single palm leaves.
  • Many churches, following the tradition, also arrange for processions in and around the church. They sing songs and all praises for the Lord and keep waving palm leaves. This era of events just helps one to realize what must have happened during Jesus’ grand entry into Jerusalem.
  • In many areas, Palm Sunday was a traditional day and people had to visit wells and leave a present for the spirit of the well. Whereas in other places, there was a custom of dropping pins in the wells while in some other places rags were hung around the well areas.
  • The thought behind all this was that the spirit of the well would be fresh and clean, away from all impurities. If palm leaves were not found then the apt substitute to be used was – sallow, or pussy willow.
  • The country folk usually knew this one as ‘English Palm’. In the days when Palm wasn’t available at all, the other substitutes were box, yew, hazel, common willow and daffodils (Lent Lilies).
