A variety of Janmashtami recipes are made from Lord Krishna’s favorite milk and curd. Most families observe a fast on Janmashtami and take only one meal in a day.This is known as phalhar, which consists of fruits, sweets and curd. As a ritual, the scrumptious items prepared on Janmashtami are offered to Lord Krishna. This is referred as the ritual of ‘bhog’. Later these yummy food items are distributed among the devotees as ‘Prasada’.

Mishri Makkhan

Mishri Makkhan

Ingredients:-

  • 250 gms fresh cream or home malai
  • 100 gm mishri

Method:-

  • Pour the entire cream in a mixer and whip it for a couple of minutes. The butter will form in a lump. Transfer in another container and refrigerate. Offer it to Mix it with Mishri.

Singhare Ki Poori

Singhare Ki Poori

Ingredients:-

  • 1 cup singhara flour
  • 1/4 cup chopped spinach
  • 1/4 cup coriander leaves
  • 2 chopped green chilies
  • 1 tbsp red chili powder
  • 1/4 cup potatoes, boiled and mashed
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 2 tsp ajwain
  • Salt to taste
  • Water for kneading
  • Oil for deep frying

Method:-

  • Mix all the mentioned ingredients thoroughly (except oil) in Singhara flour. Since Singhara flour is not like the normal wheat flour, you need not add too much of water while kneading it as Singhara atta is not like the normal wheat flour.
  • After kneading the flour well, take small portion of the flour and make it into a small kneaded ball, in your palm.
  • Then, shape the kneaded ball it into a poori.
  • Heat oil in a frying pan and fry poori

Coconut Burfi

Ingredients:-

  • 2-3 cups of grated coconut
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 tbsp of pureghee
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom powder
  • 1-1/2 cups of water
  • 2 tbsp of milk

Method:-

  • Grease a pan or plate
  • Heat another pan and put the grated coconut and sugar on a medium flame.
  • Continue to cook until the mixture begins to leave the side of the pan
  • You can now add ghee and cardamom powder.
  • When the mixture turns thick, place it onto a greased plate
  • Flatten the surface evenly.
  • Cut into squares or any shape of your own choice
  • Your dish is ready to be served.

Rava Kesari

Ingredients:-

  • Semolina/Ravai/sooji – 1 cup
  • Ghee – 1 cup
  • Sugar – 1 cup
  • Water – 3 cups
  • Cashew nuts or raisins as needed
  • pinch of saffron crush
  • Cardamom -3-4 powdered

Method:-

  • Dry roast rava (semolina) on medium flame until its lightly roasted.
  • Keep it aside.
  • Heat a little ghee, fry cashew nuts and raisins separately and keep it aside.
  • In the remaining ghee, add water, sugar and saffron and cook till sugar dissolves
  • Bring the water to a rapid boil
  • Add Semolina, stiring to break up the lumps.
  • Cover and cook stiring occasionally till all the moisture evaporates and reaches halwa consistency.
  • Decorate halwa with cardamom powder, cashew nuts, raisins

Badam Kheer

Ingredients:-

  • Semolina/Ravai/sooji – 1 cup
  • Ghee – 1 cup
  • Sugar – 1 cup
  • Water – 3 cups
  • Cashew nuts or raisins as needed
  • pinch of saffron crush
  • Cardamom -3-4 powdered

Method:-

  • Soak almonds and cashew nuts in warm water for 4-5hours.
  • Take 4 1/2 cups of milk and simmer it till it reduces to 2 1/2 cups.
  • Peel the skin of almonds
  • Grind it with a little milk along with cashew nuts, green cardamom, saffron and sugar, to a coarse paste. When the milk comes to a boil, add the ground almonds.
  • Stir and continue to cook on medium heat when milk reaches the desired consistency.
  • Remove from fire
  • Garnish with nuts
  • Fry chironji in a tsp of ghee and add to the Kheer to give a rich and royal taste.

Murukku Recipe

Ingredients:-

  • 4 cups raw rice (Powdered)
  • Half cup white gram (Powdered)
  • 25g white sesame seeds
  • 25g cumin seeds
  • 2 tablespoon asafetida powder
  • 100g butter
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying

Method:-

  • Mix the powdered rice, powdered gram, white sesame seeds, cumin seeds, asafetida powder, butter and salt together, without adding water. Then add water and knead into soft dough.
  • Heat the oil in a wok.
  • Take the dough in a murukku mould, and twist it into circular shapes of the murukku (chakli).
  • Drop in the murukku dough gently into the hot oil and fry golden brown. Keep flipping the sides until the rice chakli is done.
  • Store the murukkus in an air tight container.

Ingredients:-

  • 500g crushed khoya
  • 300g powdered sugar
  • 8 to 10 pistachios sliced
  • 2-3 drops food color (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder

Method:-

  • Mix khoya with sugar in a pan
  • Heat on low flame and stir continuously
  • Cook till mixture thickens.
  • Cool for 10 minutes.
  • Add cardamom powder and food color and mix well.
  • Take a small handful of mixture and press into the cookie mould.
  • Delicious Pedhas are ready to eat.

Til ki kheer

The ingredients and instructions to cook this sweet dish are given below.

Ingredients:

  • 100 gms of white til
  • 40 gms of sugar
  • 100 gms of coconut, dried out completely
  • 1 tablespoon of raisin
  • 4-5 pieces of green cardamom
  • 1 tablespoon of cashew nuts broken into pieces and soaked in warm water
  • 1 tin of condensed milk
  • 1 litre of full cream milk

Method:

  • Dry roast til and keep it aside after crushing it.
  • Boil milk in a saucepan for around 10 minutes and stir repeatedly.
  • Add condensed milk into the saucepan.
  • Stir and cook the mixture for around 10 minutes.
  • Crush the cardamom pieces and add them into the milk.
  • Add sugar to the milk and cardamom, and stir the mixture.
  • Add roasted til and coconut.
  • Stir the mixture and cook it for more than 10 minutes.
  • Use cashew nuts and raisins to garnish your sweet dish.

That’s because these devotees often refrain from keeping a Nirjal Fast due to health reasons and other unavoidable issues.
