Republic Day is a day to remember when the Constitution of India officially came into force on January 26, 1950.  And India become an independent republic and hence it is celebrated on January 26 every year.

The Indian Republic took birth on January 26th in the year 1950. The hoisting of the Free National Indian Flag by Dr Rajendra Prasad was symbolic. Although India won independence in 1947, interference of the British continued. However, absolute supremacy was attained in 1950 on Republic Day when all ties with the British were snapped finally. From thereon, India has assumed the image of a democratic, republic, secular, and a sovereign nation. The theory of independence and India being a Republic was conceived in 1930. But it was actually promoted into a phenomenon in 1950. Highlights of the journey of Indian Republic are given below.

Indian National Congress Discussions

  • The most significant of all discussions of Indian National Congress was the Lahore Session. That India would be a republic was first decided upon in this session.
  • The session took place on the 31st day of December in the year 1929. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru presided over the session. The Indian set a target and decided to fix January 26th as the deadline for Independence Day.
  • The Lahore Session was a stepping stone for the Civil Disobedient Movement. January 26th 1930 would be Purna Swaraj Day was decided upon right here.
  • Freedom fighters from all quarters of the country gathered at the session and shared a common view.

Constituent Assembly Sessions

  • The first meeting of the Indian Constituent Assembly was held on December 9th in the year 1946. The idea of the formulation of a constitution was taken up in the discussions.
  • In fact, this was one of the main topics that were highlighted in the session. As such several committees were formed that would look into matters related to the incorporation of the Indian Constitution.
  • Prior to the final incorporation of the Constitution of India, there were several discussions and debates. Propositions were put forward and altered many a times.

Formation of Indian Constitution

  • India became a republic in the year 1950 on January 26th. The nation now became sovereign, democratic, socialist, republic, and secular.
  • The Constitution that came into effect was expected to help Indian citizens by giving them the right to select their own leaders and government.
  • Dr Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as India’s first President. The ceremony took place at Government House inside the Durbar Hall.
  • Thereafter, the most significant event took place that Indians had been looking forward to – the hoisting of the Free National Flag – Tricolor. The first hoisting of the national flag soon after the President was sworn in took place at Irwin Stadium.

  • Journey of Indian Republic has been great. There was no looking back for India ever since it earned the Republic status.
  • The nation has experienced growth in all sectors. In fact today, India is regarded as one of the major economies of the world.
  • India had to brave several economic, social, and political storms during its long journey. But every time, it has withstood the tests of time and emerged stronger than ever before.
  • Interestingly, the housing bubble that burst in United States of America in late 2000 was able to upset all the major economies of the world.
  • Although India experienced the ripple effects but not enough that could restrict the economic growth of the country.
