Today's women have excelled in all fields ranging from household to politics and management. They are setting new benchmarks in all walks of life. They have conquered new horizons. If they can manage the household with ease, so can they scale the highest summit or even travel to space. Thus, to honor the achievements of women all across the globe, the International Women's Day is observed every year on March 8.

How did it start?

 Women's Day

In 1908, women in New York held demonstrations demanding equal voting rights, better pay and better working conditions. To honor their struggle, February 28, 1909, was declared as Women's Day by the Socialist Party of America.

In August 1910 a meeting was organized in Copenhagen in Denmark. In that meeting, 100 women from 17 countries approved the proposal of declaring a day as International Women's Day. No date was fixed but yes, the concept came into existence. Many changes took place around the world with regards to this idea. In the year 1975, the concept of celebrating International Women's day was adopted by the United Nations. Until 1977 Women's day was observed in socialist countries only. Later, when the United Nations started celebrating this day by adopting annual themes, women from all over the world began celebrating it every year on 8th March.

Why is it observed?

Women's Day is a very significant day. The day remembers the struggles initiated by women to attain equality. Many celebrations are held recognizing the unity, reflections, advocacy, actions and rights of women. The day's importance lies in the fact that a number of programs are observed to create awareness among people on a number of social issues such as gender inequality, female foeticide, domestic violence etc. These programs motivate and encourage people and governments to eradicate all forms of violence and social injustices that women have to face. It calls upon women to lead a life where they can fulfill their dreams and realize their ambitions without any hindrances.
