International Women's Day


International Women's Day is celebrated on the 8th of March every year to appreciate the contribution of the women to the society as well as their economic and political achievements, to celebrate the acts of courage of ordinary women, and to reflect upon the progress made. This year International Women's Day is being celebrated with the theme "#BeBoldForChange".

Events

Every year there are large global gatherings, conferences, awards, exhibitions, festivals, corporate events, concerts and performances etc to celebrate the occasion of IWD.

  • Events are held all over India, at National as well as community level to honour women of substance. Competitions are organised. Awareness campaigns for Breast Cancer, cervical Cancer are also held for the benefit of the women. Men gift the important women of their lives like mothers, sisters and wives with flowers and gifts.
  • In the US there are fund raisers organised for causes to benefit women. Book readings, concerts and conferences are also held. Pubs, restaurants and beauty parlours have Happy Hours especially for women and offer them special discounts.
  • In Nottingham this year a Career Fest called I am Visible is being organised.
  • In Brisbane there will be a marathon called the Fun Run.
  • An International Woman's Day Conference is being held in Aberdeen.

Women's Day Celebration Across the World

Now, the International Women's Day is celebrated in more than 100 countries. This day has been marked as a national holiday in many countries including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Moldova, Mongolia, Burkina Faso, Belarus, Guinea Bissau, Cambodia, Cuba Eritrea, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Montenegro, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, and Vietnam.

  • In China, Madagascar and Nepal, 8 March is an official holiday only for women. Traditionally, men gift flowers and small souvenirs to the important women in their lives including mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, girlfriends, colleagues etc.
  • Bulgarians and Romanias observe the day as equivalent to Mother's Day, where kids offer small gifts to their mothers and grannies.
  • After the downfall of the Soviet Union, commemoration of International Women's Day has been abandoned in Armenia. Instead of March 8, April 7 has been introduced as state holiday to celebrate of ‘Beauty and Motherhood'. However, many people still celebrate IWD on March 8. ‘Women's Month' extends between 8 March and 7 April.
  • Italian men celebrate the day by offering yellow mimosas to women whereas Russian males offer both flowers and chocolate to their beloved.
  • Portuguese women celebrate IWD with "exclusive-women" dinners and parties.
  • On every IWD, Polish women organize large feminist demonstrations in popular cities.
