A wedding is the sacred occasion in which the nuptial knot which binds the two different individuals in an everlasting relation is tied. Marriage cannot be completed without a wedding ring. In some countries a couple can wed each other only by exchanging wedding ring. It is a must in every wedding. The wedding ring symbolizes love, fidelity and marital commitment to each other.
.

A wedding ring is often worn on the left ring finger, which is the fourth finger from the thumb of the left hand. But in some countries like Bulgaria, Norway, Germany, Poland and Russia it is worn on the right ring finger. In the 17th century the thumb was the wedding ring finger in England.

The wedding ring is usually worn on the fourth left ring finger of the left hand because it is believed that the left ring finger contains the “vena amoris” or “vein of love” It is a traditional belief that the “vein of love” directly ran from the heart to the fourth finger of the left hand. It is only because of this belief that in some countries the wedding ring is placed on the fourth ring finger of the left hand. The term “vena amoris” was first used by Henry Swinburne in the year 1686. By wearing the wedding ring on the fourth left finger of the left hand, the couples symbolize their undying love for each other.

But in some countries like India, Chile, Venezuela, Spain it is worn on the right ring finger. The conservative Christians and Jews in Eastern European countries also wear the wedding ring on the right ring finger. In Austria and Netherlands the catholic people wear it on the right hand. Wearing the wedding ring on the right ring finger evolves from Roman tradition. It is believed that the left hand is a negative one and right hand is a positive one. Wearing the wedding ring on the right or left finger mainly depends on custom and tradition.
