Marriage is the perfection of what love aimed at, ignorant of what it sought’. - By Ralph Waldo Emerson throws light on the significance of marriage. Marriage is a relationship based on mutual understanding, love and respect for each other. To unite the man and woman into a bond of eternity, wedding is performed so that they can enjoy a prosperous and happy married life. Of all the wedding ceremonies, wedding vows exchanged in front of family are regarded to be the most auspicious.
.

However different cultures across the world have different customs related to the ceremony of wedding vows. As in Indian culture, exchange of flower garlands, putting of vermillion on the forehead of the bride by the bridegroom and the holy necklace of ‘mangalsutra’ are some of the few and common wedding rituals. While in some countries, wedding vows with family begins with the exchange of rings between the couple as some choose a family medallion or other article of family significance to be presented on the D-day. After rings are exchanged with the uttering of words such as "With this ring, I thee wed", the parent places the family medallion around the neck of the bride with words such as "With this medallion, I take thee into my care to love as my own." This can also be a bracelet, pin, or some other ornament which may be a family belonging or something new that the bridegroom picks out special for the occasion. It is also common in many wedding ceremonies for the children of the family to place their hands on top of the joined hands of the couple during the exchange of vows. This indicates both a blessing signifying union and inclusion of both the families.

Sacred family wedding vows have their own importance as it shows reciprocation from both the families. Marriage vows on the wedding day is not just about uttering those words from the prescribed holy books, but is also about adding that personal touch to make the wedding vows look more elegant and sweet. Family wedding vows literally transform bride and bridegroom into a family. So here’s sharing with you a simple yet elegant wedding vow, taken from the book titled, Joining Hands and Hearts - Intercultural Wedding Celebrations: A Practical Guide for Couples, by Susanna Stefanachi Macomb, Andrea Thompson, Susanna Stefanachi Macomb. Here it goes: ‘I, _____, take you, _____, to be my beloved wife/husband, to have and to hold you, to honor you, to treasure you, to be at your side in sorrow and in joy, to laugh with you in the good times, to comfort and solace you in the bad, and to love and cherish you always. I promise you this from my heart, with my soul, for all the days of my life, eternal’.
