Many ceremonial customs are associated with the arrangement of wedding which lasts for a week or two. Wedding bands thereby form a significant part of wedding ceremonies as it symbolizes the union of man and woman. History of the wedding band states that the custom of wearing a wedding band originated in Egypt. It is believed that the Egyptians first invented the tradition of wedding bands made from the stem of a plant. They were in circular shapes which were meant to signify perpetual love of the two. However the Romans used the ring, as a type of wedding band, worn on the fourth finger standing especially for possession of his lady love. While, the Americans, used simple thimble, as a token to show one’s love. This thimble was represented as an 'engagement band' and once the couple married, the lower portion of the thimble was taken off, leaving only the top portion on the finger, that was worn and looked much like a ring.
.

A wedding band is made from precious metals like gold, silver and platinum. They are usually worn on the fourth finger, also referred as the ring finger. With the change of time fashionable wedding bands have come up, like, corroding of the bride’s name or message of the couple inside the band of the ring. Also engraving the engagement or wedding date on the inner side of wedding bands is becoming quite popular. Since earlier days it has been believed that, there is a gemstone representing the birth sign of each individual, hence, wearing a wedding band with birth stone is supposed to bring prosperity, good fortune and thwart off evils. Also the bride and bridegroom can exchange their birthstones as wedding bands to help building an ambience of closeness and tenderness even when one of them is far away from each other.

Many traditional beliefs are associated with the significance of wedding bands as it symbolizes unity, as it was believed that Victorian wedding rings were made of cobalt blue and diamonds and were designed in shapes of pansies or forget-me-nots. While the Russian wedding rings include a combination of three different colors of gold, believed to represent the Holy Trinity and are still used today. The Irish Claddagh ring, designed as a heart is surrounded by clasped hands and a crown, symbolizing love, friendship and eternity.
