Vishwakarma Jayanti or Vishwakarma Puja is an annual celebration in honor of Vishwakarma, who is the celestial architect. Vishwakarma has many architectural accomplishments to his credit and is considered the creator of the world by the Hindus. He is worshiped by those who work with tools and machinery.
In the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal, Vishwakarma Puja is observed in the month of September. This year, Vishwakarma Puja will be celebrated on Sunday, September 17. However, in other parts of the country, Vishwakarma Puja is celebrated on the day after Diwali which means that it would fall in the month of October or November.
Vishwakarma is the divine engineer and according to the Hindu mythology, he is the creator of the universe, which includes both heaven and earth. He is also credited with the construction of the Vajra, which is the sacred weapon of Lord Indra, the king of heaven and the devtas. It is said that he made the Vajra from sage Dadhichi's bones. He is also the creator of many other heavenly weapons such as tools and flying chariots.
Lanka: The City of Gold is another marvelous piece of architecture said to be created by Vishwakarma. Lanka, which was ruled by Ravana, was actually created by Vishwakarma for Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva, upon his marriage with Parvati, had insisted Vishwakarma to create a place where they could live and thus Lanka was created. It was one of the most beautiful and grandest cities. Pulastya rishi, the grandfather of Kuber and Ravana, who was invited by Shiva for the housewarming ceremony was so awestruck by the beauty of the city that he asked asked Shiva for the Golden palace. Shiva acceded to his request and granted him the city. Lanka later passed on to Kuber from whom it was usurped by Ravana.
Vishwakarma also built Dwarka, the city of Lord Krishna. According to mythology, the city of Dwaka was created overnight. Today, Dwarka is located in western India in the state of Gujarat and is a pilgrimage center for the Hindu community.
He is also responsible for the construction of the Maya Sabha of the Pandavas and is also at times referred as the divine carpenter.
Vishwakarma Puja is a big day for workers. Factories and industrial units observe a holidays on Vishwakarma Puja. Professionals such as engineers, architects, workers, mechanics, craftsmen, artisans, etc worship Vishwakarma at elaborate pandals which are set up in the factory or office premises and contain the images of the deity. The puja is attended by the factory workers and the management along with their families. Workers do not put their tools to any use as they worship them in Vishwakarma's name. Artisans clean their tools and old machinery is also painted. Vishwakarma's blessings are sought for a bright future, prosperity and safe working environment. Following Puja, prasad is distributed to all the workers present on the occasion. Many organizations also declare bonus for their workers on the day. Many events are organized on the day such as fairs and shows. In many parts of the county, people fly kites on the day.
