The Fourteenth of February is Valentine’s Day. It is set aside as a day to show love and affection. There are different legends as to where or how the celebration of Valentine’s Day began. No one is really sure how Valentine's Day got its start. DGreetings gives you an insight into Valentine's Day Facts. |
Some legends say that the celebration of Valentine’s Day started when a priest in Rome named St. Valentine secretly married soldiers against the wishes of the Roman Emperor Claudius II. The emperor had barred marriage for young men, claiming that bachelors don’t lose their fighting edge and made better soldiers. So he ordered them to remain single.
St. Valentine, knowing this practice was unfair to the young lovers, continued to secretly execute weddings. When the emperor found out what was happening, he had Valentine executed. Followers of Valentine buried his body in a churchyard in Rome and through the years stories of Valentine were retold. Another legend says that Valentine, incarcerated by Claudius, fell in love with the daughter of his jailer. Before he was put to death, he allegedly sent her a letter signed “from your Valentine”. There is another legend that says the saint was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. As stated earlier, there are many myths of how St. Valentine's Day actually began but the essence remains the same- celebration of love.
The modern day celebration of Fourteenth February seems to have started in England and France. However, the spirit of celebrations has transcended every political boundary. Some of the countries that celebrate Valentine's Day are The United States
Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, France and Australia. Hearts and Arrows, Cupid, Doves, Love Birds, Roses are all symbols of the Valentine's Day.
