Jim Jordan, a poet who started his poetic career in the year 1982, has gained the reputation of being the poet with an ability to touch the deepest chords of the reader’s heart. His poems were published in ‘The Great American Poetry Anthology’ in the year 1988 and ‘Eternal Portraits’ in the year 2005. The poem ‘Accidental Romantic’ is also a part of his great works. Composed in the form of a conversation between a man and a woman, the poem presents the view of the romantic man and a
woman who appears to be highly practical and unromantic. The woman questions the romantic feelings like how can the burning candle represent the growing passion in lover’s hearts? And the man on the other hand tries to give answers as well as provide arguments while explaining the romantic world. The poem can be viewed as the best usage of words for explaining the views of two persons who possess different viewpoints on romance.

Provided below are the lyrics of the poem ‘Accidental Romantic’, composed with great excellence by Jim Jordan.

She:
How nice candlelight dinner
complete with red wine,
so subtle your move
but I suppose it’s divine.
Dancing on the balcony
just part of the show,
then a walk on the beach
with sand in our toes.

He:
So let me show you
how romance should be,
with me loving you
and you loving me.

Deny if you must
your romantic side,
but your eyes show the truth
what your heart tries to hide.

She:
You think
the passions ignite
when the candle flames
burn bright?

The only truth
I try to hide
Is what you so deny;
I have no romantic side.

Strawberries dipped in chocolate,
While certainly a tasty treat,
Is no Shakespearean Sonnet
That makes romance complete.

HE:
Oh what a challenge
You are to me dear,
What would he say
If Shakespeare were here?

He’d compare your beauty
To that of a rose,
From the top of your head
To the tip of your toes.

Yet none of his words
Could do justice to you,
Or speak of romance
The way that I do.

She
Shakespeare would say:
“A rose by any other name
Would smell just as sweet”
Beauty alone set no one aflame.

Romantic visions of a roaring fire
On a cold winter’s night
Leave’s no burning desire
Only cold ashes in the early light.

Now where does that leave us?
Me, hopeless at romance,
And you a hopeless romantic
Hoping for the evening’s last dance.

He:
Yet there’s something about you
I cannot resist,
Like the feeling I had
The first time we kissed.

So it’s true what they say
How opposites attract,
Romantic or not
We know it’s a fact.

Love doesn’t have to be
Flashy or frantic,
We just may discover
An accidental romantic
