| Tamil new year greetings are pronounced as “Puthandu Vazthukal” with great enthusiasm. People greet each other with this phrase to embrace another new year on the first day of first month of Tamil calendar – Chittirai or 14th of April as per Gregorian calendar. Their very traditional manner of welcoming this day starts from two weeks in advance of the day. People clean and paint their houses to welcome rounds of visits made by their peers to exchange greetings. Elders present children with money as their token of blessing as passing of good wishes and prosperity. This ritual is termed as ‘Kaivialum’. Doorways are adorned and illuminated with ‘Kolam’ or rangoli and light up lamp 'Kuthu Villakku' to illumine the celebration. |
