| Tamil new year celebrations are observed with enormous ardor and enthusiasm. To usher in good luck with New Year, they perform ‘Kanni’, auspicious sight with an amalgamation of objects like betel leaves, jewelry of gold and silver, flowers, fruits and vegetables, raw rice, coconuts, nuts etc. following Kanni, come taking holy bath and wearing new clothes to visit temples and read Panchangam or almanac. Eating a dish called ‘Maanga Pachadi’ cooked from jaggery, raw mangoes and neem flowers is a major highlight of the festival. This dish taste sweet, sour and bitter to symbolize aspects of our life is a mélange of sweet, sour and bitter phases of life. |
