The Tamil New Year is celebrated on the 14th of April in the month of Chitthirai. It is the apt time of celebration for all Tamilians across the globe. There is an age old belief among Tamilians that it was on Tamil New Year’s Day that Lord Brahma commenced the creation of the world. The Tamil New Year day is similar to that of the Bengali New Year Day too. The Tamilians on this day exchange compliments and good wishes of ‘Puthandu Vazthukal’, which means Happy New Year on the fortunate occurrence of Tamil New Year.

| Like others, Tamilians too consider that doing and watching positive things on the event of Tamil New Year’s Day will definitely bring forth prosperity and wealth in the year to come. Kanni is trailed on by a customary bath where all the Tamilians gather together around the household altar for participating in a religious ceremony. Special prayers are also offered to Lord Ganesha along with sweets, fruits and flowers. These all are considered to be lucky as per the Tamil New Year horoscope. |
