| Tamil new year legends denote myriad concepts of celebrating this festival. Varushapirapu is a Tamil term for Tamil New Year. As the name suggests ‘Varusham’ in Tamil means ‘year’ and 'Pirapu' indicates to commencement or birth, it marks a new year. This is celebrated on the first day of the first month Chittirai. This day heralds the fortnight of the waxing moon and was selected by Lord Brahma to start creating the world or ‘Yuga’. So this day is also defined as ‘Yugadhi’. This day continues gathering further significance followed by the legends of return of Sri Ramachandra and marriage of Goddess Meenakshi to Lord Sundareswarar. |
