The Ram Navami festival is dedicated as the day of birth of Lord Rama. Occurring on the ninth day (navami) of the month Chaitra, the Ram Navami date falls differently every year. According to the Gregorian calendar, the month of Chaitra matches up with the month of March-April. Celebrated as the birthday of Lord Rama, Ram Navami is extensively celebrated all across India, wherever there is a Hindu populace. Lord Rama had been known for his prosperous and righteous deeds and during his era, there was absolute peace and serenity. In 2012, the Ram Navami date is 1st April which is a Tuesday.Usually falling on the English month of March, the date of Ram Navami also happens to fall in the month of April.
Celebrations commence by offering prayers to the Sun early morning and then a special prayer is offered during the mid-hour of the day when he was born. That is not it, as Ram Navami also puts an end to the Chaitra Navratri. Lord Rama is believed to be the seventh embodiment of Lord Vishnu and was known as Maryada Purushottam – which meant a personification of politeness and virtue.
Mainly a Hindu festival, Ram Navami is mostly practiced in North India. In the North, it is a nine-day long festival and the main day of celebration is the final day of Chaitra or Vasant Navratri. In many parts of India, this period is also known as the Ramayana week. Hindu devotees follow all the traditions of Ram Navami and following the same they go on a fast, perform pujas at noon. In Vishnu temples across the country, special pujas are held for this special day. Narrating verses from the Ram Charit Manas, singing bhajans, chanting Ramnaam, and keeping a fast – all these help in getting the blessings of Almighty. Processions come out, where a chariot is highly adorned and people dressed up as Rama, Laxman, Sita and Hanuman take part in the procession. This kind of a procession is escorted by thousands of Ram devotees.
There is no further need to ask someone when is Ram Navami. The listing of the Ram Navami dates of different years will help you make arrangements and preparations for the pujas ahead of the date.
