Newfoundland Dog History

Known as a working partner of the fishermen and the inhabitants of the island of Newfoundland, Newfoundland dogs are giant dogs developed from Tibetan Mastiffs, Great Pyrenees, or the big black wolf dogs. According to the Canadian Kennel Club Breed Standard for the Newfoundland Dog, the breed has originated from the native dogs of the island, and from the wolf dogs that were brought by the Vikings in 1001 A.D. There is much
uncertainty about the Newfoundland dog history. According to some, the breed was developed from the white Great Pyrenees, the dogs brought by the Basque fishermen. Others believe that it originated from a French hound. However, all agree that the breed owes its origin in Newfoundland, Canada and his predecessors were undoubtedly brought to the island by the European fishermen.

The Englishmen on the island of Newfoundland were impressed with the huge size and strength of the breed and were taken back to Great Britain. In England, these large black dogs were mated with the large estate dogs. At first the breed was developed by natural selection and later by selective breeding.

The breed itself got its formal name during the latter half of the eighteenth century, when George Cartwright gave the name Newfoundland to his own dog in the year 1775. The breed got immensely popular in England by Lord Byron, who wrote "Boatswain" in memory of his Newfoundland dog. Lord Byron created a monument with the following inscription, which became the most popular lines ever penned down about a dog:

Near This Spot
Are Deposited the Remains Of One
Who Possessed Beauty without Vanity
Strength without Insolence
Courage without Ferocity
And All the Virtues Of Man Without His Vices
This Praise Which Would Be Unmeaning Flattery If Inscribed Over Human Ashes
Is But a Just Tribute To The Memory Of
Boatswain, A Dog
Who Was Born At Newfoundland, May 1803,
And Died At Newstead, November 18, 1808.
