The Newfoundland dog breed is a working dog that owes its origin in Newfoundland, Canada. The history of Newfoundland Dog Breed is uncertain, there are several stories related to its origin. According to some, the breed was developed from the crossbreeding of indigenous dogs of the island with the foreign breeds like the Great Pyrenees or the French boarhound. Whatever be its origin, the Newfoundland is a life saving dog that has saved many people from drowning. |
The Newfoundland is a giant dog that stands 26 to 28 inches at shoulders and weighs around 120 to 150 pounds. The Newfoundland's head is massive and wide. A standard Newfoundland has dark brown eyes that are deeply set and spaced wide apart. The breed has small and pendulous ears that lie close to the head. The Newfoundland dog has an impressive deep chest and possesses dense and water-resistant double coat. The outer coat is long and wavy where as the undercoat is oily and protective. Newfoundland is seen in different colors, the most common are black, brown, gray or black with white markings. It has a wide tail that is well covered with fur. Its feet are webbed and large; it helps the dogs in navigating swamps, marshlands, bogs, and shores.
Newfoundland aka Newfies are well known for their gentle and pleasant disposition. The breed possesses an outstanding temperament which is aptly penned down by Lord Byron in his famous poem

They are friendly with kids and are considered as reliable companions and protectors of kids. Do you remember the dog Nana in James M. Barrie's Peter Pan? He was a Newfoundland!! Apart from being a great baby sitter, the breed gets along well with other animals too. The breed demands a lot of affection and attention from their owners. So, if you are a world traveler it's not a breed for you.
