If you are a dog lover, yet have allergic reactions to them, there is a simple alternative. If you cannot simply do without a four-legged furry friend, then selecting a hypoallergenic dog that won't exacerbate your allergies is without doubt the best alternative. Now the question arises what does hypoallergenic really mean? To be hypoallergenic is to have a |
decreased tendency to cause allergic reactions. Hypo means less and not none. By hypoallergenic dog breeds we mean reduced allergic reaction breeds and not non-allergic breeds because non-allergic breeds simply do not exist. Hypoallergenic dog breeds generate allergens, but because of their coat type produce less than other breeds.
Contrary to the common perception, allergies are not generated by dog hair but it is the dog dander allergens that cause watery eyes, sneezing and other allergic reactions. Dander are microscopic particles of dead skin that are so minute and small that they circulate through air, or there in your dog's saliva or in his hair, or may be lingering in your furniture. Allergic reactions trigger when our immune system starts fighting the minute particles of dander, considering these substances as invading antibodies. Our immune system produces histamines to fight the dander which results in itchy eyes, sneezing, coughing, runny nose, difficulty in breathing, itching eyes and other allergic reactions. Usually the allergic reactions don't take place the first time you are exposed to an allergy-producing substance, in this case dander. It takes multiple exposures over a period of weeks or months to produce full blown reactions. While picking a dog from a breeder, try spending at least an hour playing with the pooch, you can also hug and kiss the dog or be close to the dog to see how you react to it. If you develop severe allergic reactions in that short amount of time, then you can be pretty sure that having that pooch as a live-in would be really horrid for you. You can also borrow a dog from the breeder for few weeks to get more conclusive results.
Usually larger and longer haired dogs have a tendency to produce more dander than smaller and shorter haired dogs. Given below is a list of hypoallergenic dog breeds:
