Originally bred as a mountain sheepdog in Germany in 1700's, German Shepherds are now regarded as wonderful family pets. The origin of German Shepherds can be traced back to 7th century A.D., when a widely diverse group of farm and sheepherding dogs were interbred in Germany to produce breeds with desired working abilities. In the late 19th Century, some breeding groups of sheepherders met and formed an organization named Phylax society with the aim of producing native German breeds of high merits. However, the group was disbanded in 1894, but it did sow the seeds for Der Verein fur Deutsche Schaeferhunde (sv). This organization was founded by Max von Stephanitz, a cavalry officer acclaimed as the father of the breed. He was the one who embodied the superior qualities found in all the shepherd dog breeds into one breed. Thus he developed a breed that had merits like sharpness, strength, courage and ability found in different sheepdogs. In a way Max von Stephanitz developed an all-purpose working dog. It is said that the cavalry captain used native sheep dogs of the short-haired, long haired and wire-haired types that were commonly found in such places as Thurginia, Bavaria,and Wurtemburg to develop the modern-day German shepherd.
