There are several theories that exist regarding the origin of the boxer. One theory, from the 1800s, says that the Boxer has its roots in Germany. It maintains that boxer was developed in Germany as a cross between the mastiff-type bullenbeisser, a dog of Mastiff descent and English bulldog. Another theory claims that the boxer is of a Tibetan origin and is a much older breed, descendant of the fighting dogs found in the high valleys of Tibet.
The origin of the name "Boxer" is rather obscure. Some people say that the breed got its name from the "boxing" movement they made with their front paws. Whereas some believe that Boxer owes its origin from the German word "Beiszer" which signifies biter of bulls, while others maintain that it derives from the word "boxl", the second name for the now extinct Brabanter dog.
Boxers are muscular and medium in size with, strong limbs, short back and short, tight-fitting coat. Weighing around 66 - 70 lb and standing 21 - 25 in. is a perfect combination of strength and agility. The Boxer displays expression of alertness and exerts a penetrating gaze. They are commonly used in police work, search and rescue, and military work. As Boxer Dog Breed is also found to be good tempered, the animal nowadays gains increasingly popularity as house pets.
