International Day of Peace 2011

The International Day of Peace or World Peace Day is annually observed by the United Nations General Assembly and people around the world. The purpose is to appreciate all efforts taken to end conflict and promote peace around the world. The International Day of Peace 2011 will be observed on September 21, which is the fixed date for celebrating this special day. This day is also considered to be a day of ceasefire, be it personal or political. However, it is not a public holiday.

Origin of International Day of Peace

The United Nations (UN) introduced the concept of the International Day of Peace in 1981. The date for the celebration coincided with the opening of the UN General Assembly.
The first celebration of the International Day of Peace was held in 1982. Since then, it has been observed on the third Tuesday of September. However, in 2002, September 21 was declared as the fixed date to celebrate the World Peace Day.

How the UN will Celebrate International Day of Peace 2011

The International Day of Peace 2011 will be celebrated by the United Nations in just the similar way it is observed every year.
On September 21 every year, the United Nations Headquarters organizes a special ceremony near the Peace Bell that’s located on the lawn of the UN Secretariat building. The Bell has been gifted to the UN by the United Nations Association of Japan.

On the International Peace Day, the United Nations Secretary General delivers a speech at 10.00 a.m. local time, before ringing the Bell. Through this message, the UN encourages people throughout the world to promote peace and harmony. There’s a moment of silence observed, after which the President of the Security Council makes a speech on behalf of the Council members. This is followed by the regular session of the UN General Assembly.

How People Will Celebrate International Day of Peace 2011

In 2011, people will observe the World Peace Day in a similar way as they celebrate it every year. On this day, people around the world organize events and activities like peace ceremonies and peace prayers. Whether it is lighting candles, planting trees, or organizing art exhibitions, you’ll find all such activities being held on the World Peace Day 2011. Other events planned for the day are a peace convoy of vehicles and peace processions. You can expect to find such events being organized in 2011 as well.

A number of youth organizations promote the International Peace Day by engaging young people in crafts and activities. One of the most popular crafts is to create dove puppets and fly them. Dove is a symbol of peace or the hope for peace, according to Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. In addition to dove puppets, children also create peace flags or peace poles to proclaim that they want peace in the society.

The International Peace Day witnesses people from various sections of the society organizing the International Day of Peace Vigil. A minute of silence is also observed at noon throughout the world.

How You May Celebrate the International Day of Peace 2011

The most popular way to celebrate the International Day of Peace is to observe a moment of silence, thus thinking about how to maintain peace and harmony among people and nations. All you have to do is to visualize a world where peace and justice prevail.
Aside from the moment of silence, you can go for a peace walk or sing a peace song. You may raise the UN flag or flags that represent different nations. You can plant a tree or work as a volunteer at a recycling center. You may visit a nursing home or make a new friend on the International Day of Peace 2011. On this special day, you can participate in parades, parties, and crafting where you create pinwheels to promote peace. You may light a candle or ring a bell as a way of celebrating the International Day of Peace 2011.

The International Day of Peace is celebrated with the aim to maintain peace among nations so as to get rid of wars and conflicts. So, join the UN as they observe the International Day of Peace 2011, and make the day memorable for one and all.
