Mother’s Day is celebrated to honor all the mother’s all over the globe for their untiring efforts to give us all that we want. In fact, it is for mothers that the world is a better place to live in. Hence, it is human nature to find out the Origin of Mother’s Day. The observation of Mother’s Day can be traced back to the ancient times during the reign of Greeks where the spring celebrations were held to honor and respect the love and care of Rhea—Mother of Gods and Goddesses and wife of Cronus. From here, originated the celebration of this special occasion to pay tribute to mothers for their immense love and sacrifice too.
Again, in ancient Rome too, people celebrated this occasion. Hilaria, as the Mother’s Day is known as in Rome, is dedicated to Cybele—a mother goddess. No doubt, this was started before the birth of Christ—some two hundred years before. The celebration was held on the Ideas of March in the temple of Cybele where offerings were given to the goddess and this continued for three days followed by parades, masquerades and games. Even the Christians celebrated the Mother’s Day on the 4th Sunday of Len to pay honor and respect to Mother Mary—Mother of Christ. This Sunday was known as Mothering Sunday in England. So, this refers to the early Origin of Mother’s Day and its subsequent celebration.
