Mardi Gras Carnival

Mardi Gras is a popular celebration of the Christian community and is observed on the Tuesday before the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Earlier on it was popularly known as Fat Tuesday as lavish foods were eaten on this day before the fasting started. 

Although it was initially observed for one day, nowadays celebrations extend for weeks and even months. Today, countries like Brazil, the US, Colombia, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, and Mexico are popular for their Mardi Gras carnival celebrations. 

New Orleans Mardi Gras carnival
  • The most famous Mardi Gras celebration in the US takes place at New Orleans. The tradition of the celebration in the US had begun with the French settlers and still continues in several cities which primarily have French origin Americans.

  • The first Mradi Gras celebration in the country was observed on 17th century. Now the celebration has become synonymous with New Orleans. The celebration begins after the Twelfth Night, on Epiphany, which falls on January 6th.

  • The celebration begins two weeks before Fat Tuesday and ends on Ash Wednesday. Mask parades are the major parts of the celebration.

  • Normally there is one major parade on each day of the celebration. Some days they can even have several large parades if the weather permits.

  • The New Orleans carnival is organized by Carnival Krewes. They organize parades with floats and throw traditional beads and doubloons, which have their logo, to the crowd.

  • The main celebrations take place in Bourbon Street and the French Quarter. King Cake parties and masked balls are integral parts of the carnival. The Big Easy of New Orleans is the largest free carnival in the world.

Mardi Gras Carnival of Brazil:
  • Carnival is the biggest celebration in Brazil. In fact, it attracts 70% of its annual tourists during this period. The week before the Lent is a holiday in the country and Brazilians get into the mood of party with carnival celebration.

  • Trinidad and Tobago enjoys a very strong French root which is the reason for vibrant Mardi Gras celebration in the region. The carnival takes place on the Mondays and Tuesdays before Ash Wednesday.

  • The Caribbean destination attracts most of its tourists during this time. Band music, dancing, elaborate costumes are important parts of the celebration. Becoming Calypso Monarch is one of the highest honor one can receive in the country at this point in time.
