Mardi Gras is a grand festival belonging to the Mediaeval times. Over the period of time, this festival has transformed into a grand Carnival. Origin of this fete can be traced back to Romans living in medieval period in Europe. It was also known as Lupercalia. During this, Romans paid homage to their deity Lupercus. This circus-type fete is now world famous for its color and vibrancy.
Mardi Gras takes place in between 3rd of February and 9th March.
The grand celebrations however, begin on 6th January. This is also known as the “Twelfth Night”. Mardi Gras ends a day ahead of Ash Wednesday, which is also known as the “Fat Tuesday”. The festival gives way to the Lent, welcoming the festival with its own departure.
