'Resham' means silk. Rakhis made out of silk are the most popular kind of Rakhis. All Traditional Rakhis are usually made out of silk or silk thread. Of course they are topped up with a plastic flower or a metal idol of Lord Ganesha but the basic structure of the Rakhi is silk. The Primary reason for this is that Silk is considered the most precious out of all materials, like cotton, Khadi so on and so forth. |

And since this is an occasion to celebrate the love between a brother and sister, Silk is a most appropriate choice as it is sleek, subtle yet stylish.
Most Traditional Rakhis are made out of Wild silk, generally locally prepared; therefore they fall well into the affordable bracket and are not very expensive. The common variety of Rakhi lasts well for 2-3 days before the threads start falling apart, but that's all right since most brothers wear a Rakhi only for a couple of hours. They come in different colors of course with red being the most popular because of the divine symbolism.
If you are feeling rich, you could always invest in Pure Silk Rakhi, which are hard to come by but with a little research you should be able to find one that suits your taste and budget. The silk for these Rakhis is usually imported from Thailand. The reason why it is so expensive is that one pound of silk is made using 3000 silkworms! Quiet a task, it is. However, should you manage to lay your hands on one of these, it will be a unique Rakhi gift for your brother.
Though of course it is important to remember that whether you gift him a flower Rakhi or a stone Rakhi,he will appreciate it just as much as a silk Rakhi.
