Rakhi is an important Indian festival, celebrated each year on the full moon day of Shravan (august). The festival has its roots in ancient Indian history and mythology. Rakhi customs involve the tying of the Rakhi (amulet) by a sister around her brother's wrist. This she does so that he may be protected from all evil and harm as the Rakhi works like a 'Raksha Bandhan' or a bond of protection. Thereafter the brother blesses and vows to protect here from all worldly harm for as long as he lives. |

Once the rituals have been performed, the brother usually gives the sister a gift which traditionally use to be cash but over the years has gone into a wide range of possibilities. There are some gifts that are particularly given on Rakhi and then there are others which have nothing to do with Rakhi but are still given as a token of appreciation. These days it is also common for sisters to give gifts to brothers after the Rakhi has been tied. And as for the kids, it's a mini Christmas of sorts as they exchange gifts amongst each other.
Yet the beauty of this festival does not lie in the gift but how it is accepted. Anything that you gift your sibling will surely be appreciated regardless of its material value, for the underlying emotion and message is more important. It is a way of showing your appreciation for the support they have provided you over the years and a way of showing them how much you love and care about them. Hence, most people take this chance to shower their brother or sister with gifts so that they may display their affection.
