Rakhi, as a festival has gained much prominence over the past few years. Despite the fact that it has become rather commercialized, it continues to remain a celebration of values that are so intrinsic of the Indian culture. Raksha Bandhan, as it is traditionally called, is celebrated on the full moon day of Shravan (first week of August). The rituals involve a sister tying a Rakhi or an amulet around her brother's wrist. |

As she does this, she appeals to the God's to protect her brother from all evil and harm. The brother in turn blesses her and vows to protect and honor her for as long as he lives.
Once the rituals have been performed, its time for the gifts. Traditionally the brother usually gave the sister a small token of his affection, which could be anything from a handful of grain to some cash. However, over the years, the practice of giving gifts has branched out and both the brothers and the sisters usually gift each other something. There are a wide variety of Rakhi gift choices these days. Amongst them is the ubiquitous Rakhi gift baskets, the staple of many Indian festivals yet specially customized in keeping with the Rakhi fervor. Lets take a look at some of the popular Rakhi gift baskets-:
Rakhi Sweets Gift Basket
Sweets or 'Mithais' as they are popularly referred to, are an important part of every Indian Festival particularly Rakhi, because of the rituals that involves a brother and a sister feeding each other a small piece of sweet after the Rakhi has been tied. Come Rakhi and all the sweetshops go into a sort of frenzy creating gift baskets full of Rakhi sweets. Think of them as a rather large platter of Indian sweets.
Rakhi Flower Gift Baskets
Now who doesn't like flower? They are subtle, sophisticated and full of symbolism at the same time. Flowers are your best option if you have a brother or sister who doesn't much care about material gifts. They are a thoughtful alternative to any other gift and should you choose to dos o, they can even be combined with a gift. Local florists customize the flower baskets in keeping with the Rakhi festival decorating them with trinkets and amulets.
Rakhi Food Gift Basket
If your brother or sister is fond of good food then you cannot go wrong with a Rakhi Food Gift Basket. However instead of buying the customized versions available in the market, it would be a better idea to create your own basket with a selection of food that you know your sibling really enjoys. The reason for this is because India has a wide variety of cuisines and you may not find a basket that caters to these specialized tastes or your sibling may prefer European cuisine.
Special Rakhi Basket
This will take a little while but the reward will be truly amazing. What you need to do is gather items which are of significance to your sibling and you, like photographs, video recordings, select the best one's top them up with funny caption and complete the basket with a specially recorded CD which has all you sibling's favorite music along with a personal message from you, telling him/her how much you care and love them and cherish them! This will definitely go down as one of those Special Rakhi Gifts that are hard to come by!.
