Ganesha Puja

The elephant headed God, son of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, is one of the most beloved in the Indian pantheon and is worshipped on almost all occasions as it is considered auspicious to start of any holy activity or ceremony in his name. He is also known by various other names such as Vinaayaka or Vighneswara and is considered the God who will help us overcome all obstacles. Worshipping Ganapati endows man with the courage and confidence needed to enter upon and carry through any undertakings in the world. So it is only appropriate that every rite or ceremony or project should be started with the worship of this God. According to the Puranas (epics), this was a boon conferred upon Him by Lord Shiva.
Little wonder then that on Diwali night, this elephant headed God shares the altar with the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity Lakshmi. It is believed that nothing is more auspicious than worshipping both these Gods at the same time as it heralds a year of prosperity without any obstacles whatsoever.

Shri Laxmi-Ganesh Puja takes place on Diwali by placing their idol on a platform, making various offerings of sandal paste, saffron paste, perfume(itr), haldi, kumkum, abeer, gulal, garland of cotton beads, flowers, especially the marigold flowers and leaves of Bel (wood apple tree). Incense stick and dhoop is lit and offering of sweets, coconut, fruits, and tambul are made. At the end of pooja, aarti dedicated to Lord Ganesh is sung by the devotees.

Here is Lord Ganesh Aarti, which should be sung at the time of Ganesh Puja for paying reverence and respect to Lord Ganesh.
