There are many songs and poems about the festival as well. For Indians,
Hindus to be specific, Diwali is the most significant religious festival of the year. People gather together with their families to worship the Goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi. The Lakshmi Pooja is a tradition of Diwali and is a rather elaborate Pooja which marks off the festivities of the evening. People thank Lakshmi for giving them wealth and success and invoke her blessings for the nest year as well. People also believe that on this auspicious day, goddess Lakshmi visits their houses so they make sure that their houses are well lit in order to welcome the benign Goddess
The most beloved God of the Hindu pantheon, Ganesha, the remover of all obstacles is also worshipped as it is considered auspicious to kick start every event in his name. There are many customs associated with Diwali, the most notable amongst them being the practice of lighting Diyas. People illuminate oil lamps all around their houses. Making Rangolis is a common practice too.
