Valentine's Day holds the reputation of a festival celebrated all over the world with much enthusiasm and fervor. Well Valentine’s Day is a day filled with the excitement and enthusiasm felt by the lovers present in every corner of the world who regards this particular day to be auspicious enough to reveal their innermost love filled emotions for their beloveds. The history of the most popular festival of the human world dates back to the times when Romans used to celebrate the 'Feast of Lupercal' in honor of the Roman God of fertility.
According to the facts, the 15th of every February was reserved for the feast. On the eve of ‘the 'Feast of Lupercal', a ritual by the name of ‘name drawing' was followed according to which the young men were supposed to draw a name of a young girl from the lot and that girl was to be his sweetheart for the entire year. Since then the 14th February came to be celebrated as the Valentine’s Day all over the world.
Another legend associated with the history of Valentine’s Day is that of Bishop Valentine. He is the one who is help responsible for giving the word ‘Valentine’ to the world and of initializing the tradition of writing and exchanging love letters on this particular day. Bishop Valentine was a priest in Rome when the city was under the rule of 'Claudius the Cruel'. Emperor Claudius forbade the inhabitants of the Rome city for getting married but the bishop helped lovers who wanted to get married by getting them married secretly.
When the emperor came to know about this fact he ordered Bishop Valentine to be imprisoned where he died. Some believe that he died in the prison only while some believe that the emperor got him executed. Since then Bishop Valentine came to be known as patron Saint of lovers and 14th February came to be celebrated as Valentine’s Day.
