St. Valentine or Saint Valentine is better known in the history as a martyred saint of ancient Rome. Unfortunately his birthplace as well as his birth date is known to the world but he is popular as a saint who helped the young couples in love to marry each other much against the wishes of Emperor Claudius II, and was ruthlessly beheaded on the 14th of February. Since then the day of his execution came to be celebrated as the day of lovers who honored this day by making it a special day for expressing their love.
St. valentine has also been given a special place not only in the churches but also in the lover’s heart who believe Saint Valentine to be an honorable person as far as love is concerned. Saint Valentine was dearly loved by the Romans who in his living days used to assemble in the church to hear his words on love and on God. In the days of roman wars, the citizens of Rome were ordered by the Emperor Claudius II to participate in the war, whether they wished or not. But most of the Romans were unwilling, especially the young Romans, who didn’t wish to leave their sweethearts behind.
Finding the number of soldiers in the war to be so less, the emperor got annoyed and ordered that no marriages were to take place in the entire country and all the engagement were to be broken off immediately. The emperor also gave the orders of punishing those who were willing to disobey his orders. This order brought much dissatisfaction among the young lovers who were making plans of marrying and staying together for their entire lives.
Saint Valentine came forward to help these lovers and got them married so that they can spend a blissful life. He got many lovers married secretly but Emperor Claudius came to know about this and he imprisoned Saint Valentine in dungeons. St. Valentine languished in the dungeon and was executed on 14th February. He was buried by his faithful friends in the church of St. Praxedes.
Since then Saint Valentine has been considered to be God’s angel who was sent to the earth for spreading the message of love and to help those who were in love.
