At one point, Benjamin Franklin declared the turkey as the national bird against the Bald Eagle. Some of the common turkey breeds in the United States are the Bronze, Narragansett, White Holland and Bourbon Red. Turkeys generally have brown features with buff-colored feathers on the wing tips and on the tail. The male turkey is called a Tom and the female is called a Hen. A Tom is bigger, brighter and has colorful plumage whereas a Hen is drab in color and comparatively smaller. The turkey was originally domesticated in Mexico and brought to Europe in the early 16th century.
Turkey is known for its excellent quality meat and eggs. There are many different ways to prepare a Thanksgiving turkey. The most common is a roasted turkey, stuffed turkey, grilled turkey or deep fried turkey. Turkey is also commonly paired with gravy and cranberry sauce.
