Have you heard of Thanksgiving cactus? You have probably heard of the Christmas cactus, which produces gorgeous red and pink blossoms during the holiday season. But did you know that there is also a Thanksgiving cactus. Blooming at the end of October or beginning of November, with tubular and beautiful flowers portraying colors from white to dark red, and shading from dark orange to light purple. |
Thanksgiving Cactus (Schlumbergera truncate) and Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera x Buckleyi) are quite different from each other. You can make out the difference from the shape of its leaves. Thanksgiving Cactus has sharply serrated or "toothed" leaves as compared to the more rounded leaves of the Christmas cactus.
Thanksgiving Cactus is listed as zygocactus in some books, its former Latin name. And to your utter surprise, there is also an Easter cactus (Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri) that has almost three-dimensional leaves with a thick ridge on one side. This cactus blossoms in the early spring. It can also be called Thanksgiving Harvest Cactus as it comes during the Harvest fall season.
Most garden centers carry holiday Thanksgiving Cactus plants although it is easy to grow them from cuttings. When planted in a decorative pot, they make a nice hostess gift, holiday table centerpiece, or present for friends and family on the Thanksgiving Eve.
Dgreetings.com offers you a brief idea about the Thanksgiving Cactus and also provides Thanksgiving gift ideas.
