As Christmas and Santa Claus go together, so also Thanksgiving and pilgrims. Pilgrims landing on the Plymouth Rock in December 1620 had a very harsh winter and in 1621 they had bounty of harvest. During this time, they had so much that they could save for winter season even. And in order to thank God, they held their first harvest feast and probably, it is this harvest festival, which people often refer to as ‘The First Thanksgiving’ |
This autumn feast was never repeated, though, so it can't be called the beginning of a tradition, nor was it termed by the colonists or "Pilgrims" a Thanksgiving Feast. In fact, to these devoutly religious people, a day of thanksgiving was a day of prayer and fasting, and would have been held any time that they felt an extra day of thanks was called for. Nevertheless, the 1621 feast has become a model that we think of for our own Thanksgiving celebration
The First Thanksgiving lasted for three days. Governor William Bradford sent “four men fowling” after wild ducks and geese. However, it is not certain that wild turkey was part of their dinner table yet, it is certain that they had venison. The term "turkey" was used by the Pilgrims to mean any sort of wild fowl. Hence, turkey became the traditional dish of Thanksgiving.
