The Ancient Greeks hung a wreath of fresh flowers on their front doors to celebrate special occasions. From then on, this custom has spread far and wise and continues to draw the imagination of the western world even today. Wreaths are very common; particularly during Christmas one can easily spot a wreath with a green background and small red flowers and cherries and trinkets like bells etc. They truly do add to the holiday spirit. Not only are they beautiful but they also perfume the air around them. Wreaths are also common at traditional weddings as a unique wedding flower arrangement. Here's how you can make your own inexpensive wreaths at home. You will require floral foam, floral tape, foliage, a couple of flowers of your choice, and lots of ribbon or lace.
Making Your Own Unique Flower Arrangement
Dip the 12" foam base in water until the foam is damp. Do make sure that its not saturated or else the water will drip when you hang it up on the wall. However if you plan to use the wreath as a centerpiece, then let the foam soak for at least 15 minutes.
Insert the foliage first. Keep the stems short and make sure you fill the entire wreath with a green background. Insert the stems carefully into the foam to make sure they don't start falling out later. The wreath needs to be so thoroughly covered by foliage that one should have no inkling about the foam underneath.
Insert the flowers placing them evenly around the circle. Do not use too many flowers, as the purpose of the wreath is to be minimalist. Use the color of the flower wisely as it should look good against the green background of the wreath but should not overshadow it at the same time.
Wind the ribbon into soft curls around the wreath, between the flowers. You can also stick assortments of trinkets and bells to give it a festive look.
A fresh flower wreath will last for about 4 days as it is not possible to soak the foam again and again. However what you could do is sprinkle some water on it every couple of hours and also hand it in a cool dry spot. A truly unique flower arrangement!
