In 1942, Seattle was nicknamed ‘The city of Flowers.’ This nickname was soon abandoned for the richer ‘Queen city’, and finally ‘The Emerald city’. The nickname may no longer be there but Seattle to a large extent can still be called the city of flowers. For a city with a population of a little over 500,000 it has hundreds of gardens and parks. The city is home to the Northwest Flower and garden show, North America’s largest world-class flower festival, which is held there every year. |

The city also houses a very interesting society called ‘Seattle Youth Garden Works.’ (SYGW). It aims to empower underprivileged youth through garden based education and employment. Homeless youth are employed at minimum wage to work in the flower garden or farmers markets. They can even achieve a science credit for school through this ‘job’, and gain valuable work experience. The society is a recipient of several awards, including the prestigious ‘Gold Level Award’ at the 2005 North West Flower and Garden show. Learn more about them at sygw.org.
The city flower of Seattle is the Dahlia. Every autumn the Puget Sound Dahlia Association plants a dahlia display garden at Volunteer Park in Seattle, along the edge of an open grassy field. Scientist in the early 1800’s looked at Dahlia as a source of food because a disease had destroyed the potato crop. However, after tasting it, they gave up that idea and decided to grow it for its beauty only.
Seattle Florists
There are loads of florists in Seattle. The most notable amongst them being the ‘Ballard Blossom’ which is a family owned and operated florist, established in 1927. They are Seattle’s largest Florist and are nationally recognized as a “Top 50” member of the FTD. They maintain their own designers who personally look into all the arrangements. They are renowned for their wedding flower arrangements. They are an authority on Flower Delivery in Seattle.
Another renowned set up is ‘Linda’s flowers and gifts’ located at California Avenue. They had been chosen as the best florist in their area from 1998 to 2003. They can be trusted to deliver fresh flowers at a reasonable cost and what sets them apart is the excellent stock of gifts that the maintain.
