English Daisies
The 'original daisy', these red and white, yellow eyed flowers would make a spectacular border for your rock garden. Its best to sow the seeds in early spring, they would take about 4-6 weeks to bloom. In coastal climes they are likely to bloom continually and prefer warm shady areas.
Allysum (Basket of Gold)
These dwarf-like flowers are tight and compressed yet rather attractive. They can be combined with red flowers like tulips and white like candytuft to create a rather spectacular display of a colorful spring. In a rock garden, they can be used in the front of the border or as an undercover, and they look magnificent cascading down the walls. Its best to grow them in filtered sunlight, and they bloom all through spring.
Four o' clocks (Mirabilis multiflora)
As the name suggests four o' clocks bloom late in the afternoon and remain open throughout the night. They may not open exactly at 4 o' clock and can open in the morning on cloudy days. They are befuddled by the clouds. These flowers emanate a musky aroma sometime after opening. They bloom from midsummer till frost and come in a variety of colors like magenta, yellow, white and striped.
Desert Bluebells
These tough and hardy flowers can survive in any condition, they grow equally well under the sun or in the shade. These pretty purple flowers should be planted in large numbers in the space between the cobbled stones in rock gardens and in front of the flowerbed as well. They attract a lot of butterflies.
Virginia Stock
These are very pretty small 4 petalled flowers in a harmonious blend of pink, white, red and lavender tones. They should ideally be scattered in nooks, crannies and crevices, along the irregular rock walls, or edging the front of the border. They bloom after 4-6 weeks of sowing and are extremely simple to cultivate.
You could also use the stunning pure white candytufts between the lawn and taller plants, or the colorful strawflowers in an area which is too dry to grow anything else. You must always keep in mind that a rock garden landscaping requires an immense amount of time and dedication. If neglected it starts to look very shabby and is hard to clear out. So should you choose to build a rock garden, do so at your own risk!
