Most people who buy flowers or are gifted flower would like to know How to take care of their flowers and How long can the flowers be made to last? Most florists send flowers in the bud form which means it takes them about two days to bloom and then they remain in bloom for two more days after that, however with a little extra care you can easily extend the vase life of your flowers to a week.
For Floral arrangements
If you are particularly interested in the care procedure for flowers you should know that each flower is unique and needs to be looked after differently. However you should ensure that the vase is filled with fresh unsoftened water mixed with the floral food that should be provided to you by your florist. Should the flower food solution appear cloudy it should immediately be replaced and if possible the stems too should be cut with a sharp knife, taking off about two inches before reinserting them in the vase. Flowers should be kept in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, under the ceiling fan or on electrical appliances like refrigerators and televisions. It is essential that you keep the flowers away from any source of heat as that would greatly help reduce the dehydration process.
For unorganized bunch of flowers
Keep your flowers in a cool spot. Remove any leaves that may be under the waterline in the vase as leaves promote bacterial growth, which causes flowers to emanate a repugnant odor after about two days. Prune the stems before you place the flowers in the vase. This you must do underwater as it causes the flower to take in water instead of air, which would just lead to dehydration. Ensure that you purchase flowers that are in the bud form but beginning to show signs of blooming. Buying flowers with yellow or wilted leaves would be a bad idea. Another factor to consider would be the stem, if the stem is firm and upright, the flower will last longer but if it looks like its going to give away under the weight of the flower, do not purchase it.
While its not always possible to go around cutting stems and employing fancy means of caring for your flowers, the least you could do is make sure that they are kept in a cool spot in a vase full of fresh water which must be changed daily. Make sure you follow these flower care tips.
