This left the father of the bride, furious, insulted and disrespected. It simply meant at that time as a loss of property. To balance this loss, the father demanded from the groom to pay a price for the bride. The engagement time was simply the period that was given to transfer the money or ownership.
But with time this wedding engagement ritual changed completely. The procedure that came forward came to be known as ‘dowry’. It was a fixed amount that the bride’s father was required to pay to the groom as a token to take care and maintain his daughter for the lifetime. The engagement was the period or the time given to the bride to collect a huge trousseau of items for beginning her new life with her husband.
The engagement ring was originally also a part of this tradition. It used to serve a dual purpose. The engagement ring was a partial payment for the bride and also a symbol of the groom’s promise to wed her.
The use of diamond engagement ring first appeared in medieval Italy. Diamond is a stone that symbolizes the eternal love because of its hardness. Also a diamond is much more expensive as compared to gold and was seen as a more enduring promise, offering greater security.
Today wedding engagement is a very beautiful and pure occasion and is the reflection of the strong feelings and commitment that binds the couple together. With the wedding engagement the couple takes the first steps for the nuptial bond of togetherness.
