White Christmas

‘White Christmas' is a Christmas song written by Irving Berlin which makes one nostalgic about White Christmases. The morning after he wrote the song, Berlin usually stayed up all night writing, the songwriter went to his office and told his musical secretary, "Grab your pen and take down this song. I just wrote the best song I've ever written, hell, I just wrote the best song that anybody's ever written!"

The Song
Among the Christmas songs, White Christmas has unparalleled popularity and is much loved. Irving Berlin not only wrote the song but composed the tune in 1942. The song was first heard in the Bing Crosby movie, Holiday Inn. The song became especially special to the soldiers who were fighting in the Second World War and to their families who were anxiously waiting for them at home. The most popular version though would have to be the one by Bing Crosby with John Scott Trotter's orchestra and the Ken Darby Singers. Later on it was also on the soundtrack of the movie by the same name – White Christmas. Bing Crosby starred in the movie as well along with Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen.

Irving Berlin was a Jewish immigrant without any direct experience of the holiday and therefore struggled to gain an understanding of the Christmas traditions. In the original verse, a well off Los Angeleno is mocked because he long for a traditional Christmas up north all the while lounging amongst palm trees. However Berlin decided to drop this verse later.

Other Recordings
While the original version was recorded by Crosby, the song was so popular that it has inspired over 500 recordings since then. It is the best selling record ever in the history of Music and Bing Crosby’s recording alone has generated sales of more than a 100 million copies. Among the more than 150 artists who have done cover version of “White Christmas “ since 1942 are Tony Bennet, The Carpenters, Nat King Cole, John Denver, Neil Diamond, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisland, Donna Summers, The Supremes, Destiny’s Child, Kenny Rogers, Gloria Estefan, and Garth Brooks among others.

The song has also been translated into more than 50 languages including Dutch, Latin, Portuguese as well as Italian (Bianco Natale), French (Noel Blanc), Spanish (Navidades Blancas and even Yiddish (In Vayse Nitl).

White Christmas Lyrics

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten,
and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white
