Walt Disney released The Santa Clause movie in 1994. It has gone on to become one of the most popular Christmas movies ever. Though, it is not spoken of in the same circles as ‘The White Christmas’ or ‘Scrooge’, it has gained immense success for itself. Tim Allen stars in the movie as a father who has the task of becoming Santa Clause because of the tragic death of the merry elf. The film’s tagline was “This Christmas, the snow hits the fan.”
The movie like most Christmas movies attempts to drive home a message at the end. It is basically the story of Scott Allen who has the reputation of being a poor father and is utterly irresponsible towards his son Charlie’s needs. One Christmas Eve, Charlie comes to spend the night with his father and they suddenly wake up because they hear some noises on the roof. When Scott tries to look he sees someone on the roof and shouts out at them. The intruder is startled and falls from the building, a 20 floor fall which kills him.
When they finally get around to see who the unlucky bloke is, they find that it’s Santa Claus. Mysteriously, the man somehow vanishes leaving his suit around. Scott is mot amused at the events and together they go to the roof, where they find a familiar looking sleigh with eight reindeer ready to pull off. Father and son get into the sleigh and very soon it takes off, Charlie pesters Scott to wear the Santa suit which he eventually does and goes around delivering Christmas gifts from house to house.
Upon reaching the North Pole, Scott is informed by the head elf Bernard that he is now Santa for there is a ‘Santa Clause’ which states that whoever wears the Santa suit has to take the place of the previous occupant. The next morning he dismisses the whole thing as a dream but soon events around him make him realize that he really is Santa Claus and he must take up the mantle and do his job. As the movie progresses we watch Scott and Charlie become closer and Scott becomes more responsible. It is a heart-warming tale.
