The Nightmare Before Christmas Movie

The Nightmare Before Christmas was shot in 1933 and has carved a niche for itself in the world of Christmas movies. It is a stop motion animated musical film about the inhabitants of Halloween Town who take over Christmas one year. Directed by Henry Selick, the film is loosely based on drawings and a poem by Tim Burton, who incidentally co-produced the movie as well. The film was released by Touchstone Pictures, a film studio owned by the Walt Disney Company, after the main Walt Disney Pictures division balked at some of the darker content.

The Nightmare Before Christmas Plot
The cast of the movie includes Chris Sarandon, Danny Elfman, Catherine O'Hara, William Hickey, Glenn Shadix and Paul Reubens. The story of The Nightmare Before Christmas centers on Jack Skellington, who is the much-adored leader of the Halloween Town. Though much respect and attention is paid to Jack by his followers but then also he gets bored with the repetitiveness of the Halloween festivities and feels as if something is missing from his life. One day he gets to discover the trees depicting different festivals. When Jack opens the Christmas door, he is mesmerized with the cheerfulness and brightness of the Christmas festival and he realizes that this is the only thing he has been waiting for.

Immediately a meeting is called by him in the town hall and he tries to describe the splendor of Christmas to his followers. He even gives them a description of the leader of the Christmas celebrations as a creature resembling a lobster, with deep voice and someone who flies like a vulture on a sleigh in the sky. When the denizens of the Halloween town are not able to understand, Jack in a fit of anger locks himself in a room. After some time he comes to a realization that to understand Christmas better he needs to believe in the occasion of Christmas. He informs his followers about his intention of taking over Christmas that year. Mislead by the town meeting denizens pitch in their own ideas of creating a twisted version of Christmas. Then the movie follows the incidents of the twisted version of the Christmas prepared by the denizens of the Halloween town. In the end the true picture of Christmas is revealed with Santa appearing on the scene for correcting the twisted picture of Christmas.

The Nightmare Before Christmas In Popular Culture
When Nightmare was released on video, the general public began to discover it and it quickly gained a cult following, especially among the Goth scene. In more recent years, Nightmare has become a mainstream hit and is even considered a holiday classic. For a Halloween 2006 release, the movie is planned to go under a 3D Rerelease, shown in select theaters on October 20.

For the past five years, the Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland in California and Japan have received a Nightmare Before Christmas themed overlay, called Haunted Mansion Holiday, for their Haunted Mansion attractions. The Magic Kingdom Park in Florida might bring this themed overlay to their park as well. Sometime during 2005, a card game called The Nightmare Before Christmas TCG, was released. In March 2006, a new set came out: Christmas Town. A tournament kit also came out during that time.
