Everybodyís heard about the Second coming of Christ but does any one really know what it signifies? Thereís a popular Christian belief that Jesus Christ will descend to the earth from the heavens once again in a bid to fulfill the Messianic prophecy. Within the different factions of Christians, views differ about this Second Coming or Second Advent. Biblical Scholars say that the Second Coming of Christ is a significant theory which can explain the ultimate purpose of the world.
Perhaps the most reliable source around which the probabilities of this Second Coming are based are the four Gospels which occasionally talk about Jesusí return when the world is at its end. In Matthew 16:27, it has been recorded, "Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done" as said by Jesus Christ himself. He further elaborated in Mark 13:32, "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father".
It has also been implied in some verses of the Gospels that Jesus Christ would return before the people hew as talking to dies, in the same generation. As per Matthew 24:34 and Luke 21:32, "This generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place". Scholars argue that the term generation must mean a different thing and time period, however C.S Lewis did think that to be the ďmost embarrassing verse in the Bible.Ē It is recorded in the revelation that John the apostle did see the Second Coming of Christ and that could be considered as fulfillment of the prophecy. The Mormons believe that Christ adopted the body of John the Apostle and did therefore walk upon earth once again, so it has been argued that probably at least somebody of that generation was lucky enough to witness this near miracle.
The details about the Second coming of Christ are rather hazy and there are few who dare to unravel the symbolic verses in the bible. However, most Christians are of the view that the Second Coming is something to look forward to. The common belief dictates that when the world is about to end Christ will return judge the people and set up a kingdom of God, as is mentioned in the Messianic prophecy. Scholars however do not attempt to declare a date or hour when the Christ will re appear for such speculation tend to underestimate the ultimate purpose of manís salvation.
Many people have of course rather ambitiously tried to declare a specific date for the Christís return, only to be rebuffed later. For instance, over the course of many years, Televangelist Jack Van Impe has claimed many a times that Christ will return in a certain year or time. He now claims it would be sometime in 2012. According to Nostradamus, "from the sky will come a great King of Terror". He said it would happen in 1999. However when no such thing appeared to have happened, Edgar Cayce claimed that Christ was born in 1999 and will live on Earth as a reincarnated person.
