Homemade Christmas Gifts

If you want to create something unique, something personal, and something heartfelt, you can’t go wrong with a homemade Christmas gift. No matter what your talents are, there are tons of ways that you can create beautiful and thoughtful gifts for your friends and family. And they in turn will appreciate the effort and love that went into it. So whether you’re a wonder in the kitchen, a master with paints and pencils, a maestro at the sewing machine, or new to this whole arts and crafts thing, you’ll find an idea below that’s fun to make and perfect for your loved ones.

Flavored Cooking Oil
Save empty oil bottles throughout the year. Fill them halfway with olive or peanut oil and add twigs of dried thyme, parsley, oregano, rosemary, basil, garlic, or whatever the receiver’s favorite flavors are. Fill the bottle the rest of the way, seal it with a cork and add decorative ribbon. It will be delicious and it will look pretty on the recipient’s kitchen shelf.

Personalized Recipe Book
Collect lip-smacking recipes from books or magazines, or dig out old family favorites. Write them neatly in a cute notebook, or type them, print them out and bind them in a decorative folder. If you’ve got an artistic streak, include illustrations or photographs of the prepared recipes. An avid foodie will love it.

Chocolate Spoons Melt some chocolate (you can find tons of different recipes and variations online), and dip plastic spoons in it. Once the spoon is nicely coated (it should look like a lollipop), take it out and place it on wax paper to dry. Wrap the spoons with cellophane and tie them with a bow. Different flavor ideas include: mint, liquers, coffee, vanilla and orange.

Homemade Stationary
Paste (or draw) pictures around the borders of envelopes and plain white paper. Go for a theme based on the receiver’s interests, like their favorite movie, band, sport, activity or other hobby. To make it easier, once you’ve got the perfect border designed on one piece of paper, take it to a copy store and get it reprinted onto the rest.

Homemade Christmas Gift Ideas
If you’re still stumped, you can always try your hand at:
  • Designing magazine holders
  • Collecting and pressing dried flowers and leaves throughout the year. Then, paint them and paste them onto cardstock for beautiful homemade Christmas cards.
  • Making your own Christmas wreath. Buy a plain one and add your own golden twigs, berries, silver baubles, tiny Christmas ornaments, or whatever strikes your fancy.
  • Sewing a cute Santa stuffed toy
  • Making a bouquet of fabric flowers
  • Hand-dipping Christmas candles – perfect for table centerpieces
  • Decorating a Christmas tree entirely with handmade ornaments

  • No matter who you know or what they like, a homemade gift is a wonderful way to show your friends and family that you care about them. These gifts combine the best parts of the giving season – affection, creativity and time with your loved ones – without costing you a fortune. So now that you’ve got several wonderful ideas from our list, it’s time to turn frantic Christmas shopping in fun Christmas crafting!
